CarbonBird 18 A ESC with BEC (program with FunFly Card here) - very smooth throttle curve and good quality silicon wires and Large Capacitor.  Features 370w on 4S (16.8v/22amps for 10 secs) when needed and cruise at 302w (16.8v/18 amp continuous power) and weigh only 18 grams!  feature DOUBLE heat sinks 2.0mm - for EMI shielding and heat dissipation of the MOSFETS and BEC ; an large Cap ; Plug-n-play JST on DC side and pre-fitted 2.0mm Female GBC on extra long 135mm three phase wires - fully RoHS - Flight tested with MultiWii, PX4, NAZA / Wookong - these 18a are 400 and 490hz compatible.

Important beginner NOTES on ESC set up :  Read this before connecting your 18a ESC !!

  1. DO not connect the ESC back to front - ie reverse polarity red/black wires - You will smoke it!
  2. If cutting and soldering wires - make sure to solder all ESC wires with Flux Paste (Not flux core solder) - For push connectors a bad connection (a loose fitting connector)  or dry solder joint(no flux) - will cause the ESC to burn/fail and the motor to possibly burn as well.  Check all wiring with a DMM first.
  3. One of my ESC's in my quad is hot on the ground even before takeoff? Why?  Understanding heat in parallel connected BEC red wires) - These 18a ESC have two sides - the side with the label is the "power" side mosfets used to control and power the motor - the reverse side (no label) converts 4S.16v->5v using a LDO linear voltage reg. The by-product of linear regs is heat  - Quads only need a small amount of power and one BEC can produce this power <0.5 amps - if multiple BECS are connected in parallel the overall current used will increase as any higher voltage chip 5.1v tries to feed back into any lower voltage chip such as 5.0v. In most instances leave all the red connected and check temps - then disconnect between 1 to all red wires(for ALL disconnected situation/choice use a special uBEC HERE. It's OK for this BEC side to get hot up to 60°C on 4s. Check with an IR heat gun. However be aware - If the temperature exceeds 90°C -125°C the ESC 7805 chip will shut down to protect itself.  For this reason it is important to shed heat and control the temperature by allowing heat to move away from it with cool airflow - radiate heat out away from the ESC - We fly our Quads and Hexi and Octas with ALL red wires connected (sometimes with 1 red wire isolated) - then use a heat -gun to check temps of all BECs and mosfets - if one ESC BEC is stable at 65°C we will use Thermal tape under that ESC (BEC side down against the thermal tape) to drop that ESC down by 15°C to 50°C and do a full ground run - then check it again after the full run-time that its temp is stable at 51°c in this example.   We also use and strongly recommend a C1 Cap to prevent any possibility of a brown out.   An alternate optiion is to use a uBEC but these can produce line-noise and cause problems to the 3.3v reg downstream. there is a big difference between a stable ESC running at 65°C and an ESC with thermal run-away which will quiclkly climb to 125°C - that difference is the ability of that ESC to shed heat to a large surface area and receive good airflow.
  4. During first throttle up power check - concentrate - if the motor hesitates or stutters - or the prop twitches back and forth - IMMEDIATELY cut power (throttle OFF) - investigate for a broken wire in the motor - a shorted wire in the motor (mounting screw ruptured the windings) - a shorted connector or insulation cut  - or anything blocking the motor from turning (a screw from your work bench trapped inside on the magnets).
  5. How to reverse the direction of rotation of a brushless motor = exchange any 2 of the 3 motor wires
  6. Use a power meter to ensure you are not overloading the ESC at WOT (full throttle for the prop) - ESC works hardest at mid throttle - so it's useless to think that if you don't fly full throttle you won't overheat the MOSFET because you are not using all the amps - completely opposite - the ESC will overheat if the kv of the motor is too high for the props used.  You must do a WOT check and make SURE at full throttle the MAX amps are 22amps or less !!!!!
  7. For MultiCopters - Use an external switching 5.0v uBEC HERE - after throttle calibration of the Tx range 1095/1500mid/1905 and also after synchronizing all the 4 x ESC learning curves - then remove the red wires and apply heat shrink to the exposed red wire connector. 
  8. Learning Curve process to synchronise all ESC CPU's to expect the same signal range from RC - by-pass PARIS (or PX4) and use the RC THRO Ch direct --   PROPS OFF - connect all the ESC control leads to the  4:1 or 8:1 Y-Lead and connect al least one motor to "hear" sounds  - the other end of the Y-Lead goes direct into your throttle Channel (1)    - 1. Tx on first - set full throttle (mode 2 - left stick up) 2. Connect lipo to power ESC 3. You will hear 2 beeps from engines 4. Throttle down immediately after this 5. You will hear 4 x beeps (=4s) , 1 long beep, this means the ESCs have learnt the Multiwii throttle range which should be  1095down ->1905up  6. Disconnect LiPo - If using an external uBEC - you can now remove all the red wires and twist the signal wires (white/black) to reduce signal injection.

    Compact ,light weight and easily fits between the two decks on the scarab quad stealth,reconn or any of the Multiwii's 350 to 450 quads/Octa's. Its light enough to use on a 250 sized quad racer.
    I was surprised by how strong and well made this ESC is.
    This is a high-quality unit and performs well,just plug it in and start playing. Carbonbird definitely lead the way with performance and quality with this 18amp ESC, I will never buy a Copy King ESC again. Quality doesn't have to be expensive.
    Keep up the good work Multiwiicopter.
